The first offshore wind turbine in the atlantic ocean was deployed off the shores of Portugal last week by a company called PrinciplePower. Their design will allow wind turbines to be placed in places that were never practical or posible to place them before.
This is a very interesting idea in my mind. Just to think about all the open ocean that we could designate as an area for these wind turbines. I can picture several square mile sections of ocean set aside for rows and rows of these floating wind turbines. It is an idea that could obviously have a huge impact on our impending energy crisis and I find it very interesting as it is something that I have never thought about before.

Questions:
1: Do you think that floating wind turbines are a practical idea? Why?
2: What are some other innovative possible energy solutions?
3:How could implementing these turbines help our energy problem?
I agree with Max that this is a very interesting and practical, especially with global warming such an impending problem. This would be a fairly easy way to obtain vast amounts of energy. The only flaw I can see in this is how long the wires would have to be to get the energy where it's needed.
ReplyDeleteQuestion #1: I think wind turbines are a great and practical idea. It would be a great way to stop the use of fossil fuels and in the end slow or even stop global warming.
I also agree with Max. I think that these turbines would be something to seriously look into for energy in the future. They gain power from wind which is a renwable resource and also doesn't pollute anything in any way. There are a couple of flaws that I see however. One is what Alex said in terms of the wiring, but the real problem could be the effect the building these machines could have on the oceanic ecosystems of which they are built upon. Having a big metal thing in the water just isn't that healthy at all, in addition these turbines need to be drilled into the ocean floor which could pose very similliar threats to underwater ecosystems as natural gas drilling does to ours.
ReplyDeleteQuestion 1: I think that despite the issues these could cause underwater that these turbines are a great and very practical idea. As I said before they use a renewable resource and that is what we need to start using instead of non renewable resources in the future.
I think that this is such a good idea. I was getting so scared after we watched that video about the pollution from fracking, and this makes me feel better because of all te alternative ways that energy can be made. I don't understand why people insist on using such dirty ways of finding energy when there are millions of clean, efficient ways of doing the same exact thing.
ReplyDeleteQuestion #1
Yes, I think this probably seems like a practical idea. I would need to hear more about it before making up my mind though, because of the whole thing with the long wires, and also about whether or not this could hurt marine life in any way.
